Why Does a Light Fixture Turn Off Automatically After a While?

27 Jul 2026 0 comments
Luminaire qui s’éteint tout seul après quelques minutes causes et solutions

A light fixture that turns on normally but switches off after a few minutes can be confusing. The issue may come from heat, the LED driver, the bulb, wiring, the wall switch, a timer or a sensor. The key is to observe how long it stays on and whether it works again after cooling down.

Thermal protection

Some LED fixtures and drivers shut down when internal temperature becomes too high. The light may restart after cooling, then switch off again when heat builds up.

Unstable LED driver

Integrated LED lights depend on a driver. An ageing, overloaded or poorly ventilated driver can work when cold and fail after warming up.

Wrong bulb or wattage

For replaceable bulbs, the maximum wattage should be respected. A bulb that is too powerful can create excess heat inside a closed shade or compact base.

Loose connection

A loose terminal, worn socket or weak wall switch can interrupt power after heating, vibration or expansion.

Timer, remote control or sensor

Remote-controlled lights may have 15, 30 or 60 minute timers. Sensor lights may turn off normally when no motion is detected.

Poor ventilation

Even LED lighting needs airflow or a heat-dissipating structure. Closed spaces can trap heat and cause shutdown.

Power supply or dimmer issue

An incompatible dimmer, unstable voltage or heavy appliance on the same circuit can disturb LED fixtures.

À vérifier / Check-list

  1. Note how many minutes pass before the light turns off.
  2. Check whether it works again after cooling down.
  3. Check the timer, remote control and sensor settings.
  4. Test a compatible lower-wattage LED bulb if the bulb is replaceable.
  5. Look for unusual heat around the socket, base or driver area.

Conclusion

If the fixture smells unusual, becomes very hot, flickers before shutting off, makes noise or shows dark marks, stop using it and have it checked. Repeated shutdown is often a warning sign that should not be ignored.
